I’m relatively new to all this Messianic Movement business. This has been my first year of keeping all of the feast days and almost none of those other holidays. What does “almost none” mean? Well, I still went to my aunt’s last year for her annual Christmas brunch. I wanted to see my family and rationalized that I was going to be with family but not for the holiday. It’s all a bit muddy.
But that’s where we are today, especially those of us coming out of the Westernized Christian Church. A clean break is desired yet another desire for community and family still remains strong.
I’m learning to think like Yeshua: But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” and He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” (Matt. 12: 48 – 50, NKJV). Obviously Yeshua didn’t care if his blood relatives weren’t placed ahead of his will.
What would Yeshua have done if he were in my shoes? Ironically, I doubt Yeshua would attend a Christmas brunch even if folks tried to convince him that he was the guest of honor.
I’m going to skip the brunch this year and tell my family that I’m not celebrating Christmas. It doesn’t have to be a holiday to spend time with them. Huh! I hadn’t thought about that until I just wrote it. Another lesson from above. All glory to the Father! Can I get an “Amen!”?
